I got excited reading about this product on Sephora because it seemed to cover all the bases--salicylic acid medication, a natural astringent (witch hazel), and even something to reduce hormonal influences on the skin. So, though I was somewhat put off by the price tag, $45 an ounce didn't seem too steep to pay for something that would finally get rid of my stubborn and unsightly acne. Well, after barely a month of using it, the tube is running out (I had intended to give it six weeks, but it's not looking like it's going to last that long) I'm not sure that it's done anything at all. My blemishes are still popping up even though I'm using it twice daily as directed, they don't seem to be going away much faster (if any), and this product, I guess the way it is made chemically, interferes with almost any moisturizer or sunscreen I try to put on my face. When I try to apply moisturizer/sunscreen/primer, etc., the two products combine and make little white balls that I then have to wipe off my face -- this happened even with Dermadoctor's own "Body Guard" sunscreen. For $45 an ounce, I was expecting a product that lasted a lot longer and produced much more dramatic results. Also, the smell of the product is pretty unpleasant to me -- it has a strong medicinal smell. Fortunately, the smell goes away after about 15-20 minutes (or, at least, I can't smell it anymore). I gave this two stars instead of one because it at least didn't dry out my skin or *cause* any breakouts, which many other products have done.

  1. Hi Vera,

I am Rachel, an esthetician on staff at DERMAdoctor. We are sorry to hear that the product you are experiencing some pilling (the term used in skincare to describe when a product balls up on the skin) associated with our Ain't Misbehavin' Medicated Acne Control Serum. The product should definitely last longer than a month; most people actually get at least 2 months out of one container. You only need about a nickel sized amount of the product as it is highly concentrated - using to much product is very often what causes pilling. You would also want to make sure to allow the product to absorb and dry prior to applying another product. Normal cellular turnover is about 30 days, though as we age it is more like 6 weeks. That means that it takes at least 4 to 6 weeks to see results from a product in most cases. When trying a new acne product it is common for sking to "purge" a bit within the first few weeks as the serum is treating even what is hiding beneath the skin's surface. During this time a few breakouts are (unfortunately) likely.

In regard to the smell you are right, it has a strong medicinal due to the fact that we do not use fragrance in our products as they tend to be an irritant. It does dissapate after a few minutes.

If you have any further questions please feel free to email us at: Service@dermadoctor.com. We appreciate your feedback!

    Best,
    Rachel
